The Rebel Alliance has abandoned its base and fled to the remote ice planet Hoth. The Empire, though, is hot on their trail with probe droids. The rebels' Echo Base is soon attacked by a full-fledged imperial invasion force and they are once again forced to flee. Before leaving Hoth, Luke sees a vision of the dead Ben Kenobi, who tells him to find Yoda on Dagobah. So, Skywalker goes to Dagobah and soon has his starship stuck in the swamp slime. Meanwhile, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO and R2-D2 struggle to avoid the vicious Darth Vader's fleet. They travel to Bespin where they meet Han Solo's old friend, Lando Calrissian. Lando, however, has made a deal with the dark lord and has Han turned over to the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Luke, after training with Yoda in the swamp, sees a vision of his friends' pain goes against the Jedi master's advice. He heads to Bespin to face Vader and save his friends. After suffering a terrible defeat at Vader's hands, he loses his hand and discovers that Vader is his father. Darth Vader tries to turn Luke to the dark side, but Luke flees. Lando helps Leia and Chewbacca escape with droids and they rescue Luke. The rebels then regroup with the fleet where Luke gets a mechanical hand. With Han captured and the Rebel Alliance without a headquarters, Luke must become a Jedi to finally overcome the Empire.
