Although it wasn't easy to come up with his plot for The Notebook, Sparks' inspiration came from his wife's grandparent's 60 year marriage. Sparks' wife was very close to her grandparents from the time she was very young. Her other grandparents had died when she was young so all her attention as a grand daughter was focused towards this lovely couple. Sadly, the grandparents were not well enough to attend the Sparks' wedding. Soon to be Mrs. Sparks did her best to stay in good spirits until she saw her grandparent's corsage and boutonniere left on the table at the end of the isle. The day after their wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Sparks went to see her grandparents and reenacted their wedding. Those couple of hours spent with them was the inspiration for Nicholas to come up the story line for The Notebook.
